Softball Splits Sunday Twin Bill With No. 23 Dubuque


INDIANOLA, Iowa. (April 11, 2021) - The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team (7-12, 5-6 A-R-C) split its Sunday doubleheader with No. 23 Dubuque (13-5, 4-4 A-R-C) on Sunday evening. NWU won game one, 11-8, and fell in game two, 2-0.

Game One Recap
NWU scored first in game one with a home run by Emma Alfieri in the game's second at-bat. Dubuque answered with a run in the second inning but the Prairie Wolves countered with another home run in the top of the third inning from Taylor Styskal. 

The Spartans scored four runs in the bottom of the third, only to have Nebraska Wesleyan put up four runs in the top of the fourth. Bailey Green homered to start the inning. Later in the inning, Mollie Grant's bunt scored Valerie Gerlach then a fielder's choice from Alfieri scored Rachel Mundt. A single by Styskal scored Grant to cap the rally. 

Dubuque plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth before NWU put up five runs in the fifth. An error allowed Mundt and Alycin Braun to both cross the plate before Alfieri smacked her second home run of the game. The home run scored three runs for the Prairie Wolves. UD added a run in the sixth but wasn't allowed anything else the rest of the way. 

Nebraska Wesleyan pitchers combined to toss six strikeouts in the win. 

Game Two Recap
The second game of the twin bill featured a defensive showdown as there were just two runs scored. Dubuque plated runs in the first and fourth innings and held NWU scoreless on just four hits. Elise Warneke tossed three innings of relief work for Nebraska Wesleyan and recorded five strikeouts. She only surrendered one run on two hits in the outing.

What's Next
Nebraska Wesleyan and Dubuque play the rubber match of the series at 12 p.m. on Monday in Indianola, Iowa.
