Late Inning Runs Trip Up Softball


ST. ANN, Mo. ( March 5, 2021) - The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team (0-3) dropped a doubleheader to Webster University (2-0). The Gorloks took game one, 5-0, and used a walk-off double to win game two, 2-1.

Game One Recap
Nebraska Wesleyan and Webster played a scoreless game as Kailey Meyer shut down the WU bats. She did not allow a hit through the first three innings and went into the sixth inning with just one hit against her. In the fifth, the Gorloks found a hot streak and plated five runs then held the Praire Wolves scoreless in the top of the seventh for the win.

Game Two Recap
NWU had another strong pitching performance as Elise Warneke tossed a complete game and only surrendered four hits with no walks. Nebraska Wesleyan got on the scoreboard first when an Abby Arementrout sacrifice bunt scored Emma Alfieri from third and moved Valerie Gerlach to third base. However, the Gorloks escaped the inning before the Prairie Wolves could add an additional run. Webster University tied the game in the fifth off an RBI double and then another double in the seventh allowed them to clinch the game. 

Notable Stats and Performances
-NWU's Kailey Meyer recorded seven strikeouts and only issued one walk in game one.
-The Prairie Wolf pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts with the Gorloks recording five strikeouts.
-Nebraska Wesleyan's Hanna Roth, Emma Alfieri, and Ashlee Mayorga each recorded two hits in game two.
-NWU out hit WU 13-10 in the two games.

What's Next
Nebraska Wesleyan plays two games on Saturday, March 6 in the Fontbonne Tournament. Game one is against Transylvania University at 1 p.m. and game two is against Illinois College at 3 p.m. Both games will be played in St. Louis, Mo.
