Last Second Free Throw Sinks Men’s Basketball To Open Oregon Road Trip

NEWBERG, Ore. (December 29, 2021) - Nebraska Wesleyan men's basketball fell on the road, 69-68, to George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon.

A foul with 2.6 seconds left in regulation sent GFU to the free-throw line with a chance to break a 68-68 tie. The Bruins made the first free-throw then missed the next free-throw. Connor Riekenberg's full-court pass to Jack Groeteke was just late as time expired before Groeteke could tip in a potential game-winner.

Before the final two free throws, NWU nearly forced overtime when Riekenberg's defense caused a Bruin to miss a driving lay-up. But the loose ball rebound landed with GFU's Devan Walker, Walker then found Brendan Ritschard driving towards the basket when he was fouled. On the previous possession, Peter Lash hit a three-pointer with 25 seconds left to tie the game at 68.

Nebraska Wesleyan had to double up George Fox over the final eight minutes with an 18-9 run almost pushing the game to overtime. The Prairie Wolves dug out of a nine-point deficit to tie the game and trailed by as many as 10 points early in the second half.

In the second half, NWU shot 41.4 percent from the field but was just 25 percent behind the three-point arc. The Prairie Wolves struggled throughout the night on the three-line, as they finished just 5-for-22 (22.7 percent). From the field, they were 35.8 percent and 71.4 percent from the free-throw line.

Landon Torneten led Nebraska Wesleyan with 21 points and went 63.6 percent shooting from the field. Torneten's 21 points were a career-high. Peter Lash recorded a double-double for the fourth time this season. Lash netted 15 points and tallied a career-best 16 rebounds. Additionally, Lash was a perfect 6-for-6 at the free-throw line. Jack Groeteke came off the bench to also score a career-high 13 points. Torneten and Groeteke each hit a pair of three-points in the game.
