Wartburg Upends NWU in Final Road Game of 2021


WAVERLY, Iowa (November 6, 2021) - The Nebraska Wesleyan football team fell at Wartburg, 50-14, in the final road game of the 2021 season.

The Prairie Wolves offense faced a tough challenge with a Knights defense that ranked first in rush and pass defense in the American Rivers Conference. NWU tossed for 246 yards and two touchdowns on the afternoon. Nebraska Wesleyan is just the third opponent this season to pass for 246 yards or more on Wartburg's defense and the first to do it since October 2.

NWU's defense forced the Knights to turn the ball over twice. Andrew Ellerbee picked off a pass in the second quarter and returned it 51 yards for the first turnover. On the next defensive possession, Jacob Gramann snagged the second interception of the day. In the last two games, the Prairie Wolves have forced five turnovers; today was the fourth game with two or more turnovers.

Individually, Carter Terry led Nebraska Wesleyan with 192 yards on 20-of-35 passing. NWU had 10 different receivers record a reception with Kevin Tims hauling in seven catches for 48 yards. David O'Connell had two touchdown receptions for the third time this season and second straight game. Alex Mathis had a game-high 62 yards on three grabs. 

The defensive effort was led by Gramann and Jacob Garnas with a combined 17 tackles. Jacob Leu record a sack and a tackle-for-a-loss, both stops were for a loss of two yards. Aashton Kirkland tallied a tackle-for-a-loss with TJ Roybal and Andrew Ellerbee each getting a half a tackle-for-a-loss.

Nebraska Wesleyan returns to Abel Stadium to host Coe College for the season finale on Saturday, November 13 with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
