Dubuque Too Much For Prairie Wolves On Homecoming

LINCOLN, Neb. (October 9, 2021) - The University of Dubuque proved to be too much for Nebraska Wesleyan on homecoming. The Spartans bested the Prairie Wolves, 31-14, in Abel Stadium to end NWU's chance at back-to-back conference wins.

For the second straight week, Nebraska Wesleyan's defense delivered a scoop and score. A minute into the fourth quarter, Jacob Gramann recovered a Dubuque fumble and returned it 22-yards for NWU's first score of the game; the fumble was caused by Connor Wilcox. The Prairie Wolves have now scored a defensive touchdown in four of its six games.

Nebraska Wesleyan's offense got on the board with a 27-yard touchdown strike from Evan Johnson to David O'Connell with 5:17 left in the game to cut it to a 17 point deficit. For O'Connell, it was his fifth touchdown of the season and Johnson's first career touchdown pass as a Prairie Wolf.

Jacob Garnas led the NWU defense with 14 tackles, including seven solo stops and three and a half tackles-for-a-loss for 19 yards. Kaden Dawe added 11 stops as Zach Busmente and Gramann both registered nine stops.

Matthew Zarybnicky paced Nebraska Wesleyan with eight receptions for 66 yards. Kevin Tims had five catches for 32 yards and O'Connell tallied two other grabs for 67 yards to go along with his score. Carter Terry threw for 174 yards in the passing game.
