NWU Softball Splits Games on Opening Days of Spring Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team has started the spring trip to Florida by going 1-1 on each of the first two days of the trip.  On Sunday the Prairie Wolves defeated Lakeland University 7-0, then dropped a 1-0 decision to 20th-ranked Carthage College in 9 innings.  Monday saw NWU lose 3-1 in the morning to Simmons University before bouncing back with a decisive 8-0 win over Penn State-Altoona in five innings.

NWU is now 4-4 on the season and will play eight more games on their trip to Florida, with two more on Tuesday.

In the opening win over Lakeland, the Prairie Wolves scored seven unearned runs taking advantage of three errors.  NWU scored one run in the 1st, then plated four in the 2nd to break open the game.

Rachel Mundt, Emma Alfieri and Kailey Meyer each had RBI singles in the second inning for the Prairie Wolves.  NWU added two more runs in the sixth on a sac fly from Kellie Lang and RBI single from Alfieri.

Alfieri led the NWU offense going 2-3 with three RBI.  Elise Warneke got the win on the mound going six innings not allowing a run with 11 strikeouts.

It was a pitcher's dual between the Prairie Wolves and 20th-ranked Carthage College that went into extra innings.  Kailey Meyer of NWU and Stefanie Guercio from Carthage both were terrific on the mound.  Meyer allowed just four total hits and no earned runs in eight innings of work striking out six.  Guercio struck out 10 and didn't allow a hit in her seven innings.

Naomi Alonzo doubled to left center for the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 9th inning for the only run of the game.

NWU didn't get a hit until the 9th inning when they had the best chance at scoring.  Morgan Shipley was placed on 2nd base due to the international tie-breaker rule and she moved to 3rd on a single by Taylor Styskal for the lone hit of the game.  A hit batter loaded the bases, but the threat ended with a ground out to the pitcher.

Early on Monday morning the Prairie Wolves suffered their second straight loss with a 3-1 setback to Simmons University.  NWU wasn't able to score until the 6th inning as they went 14 straight innings without a run.

Simmons scored two in the 2nd inning on a double, then went up 3-0 with an RBI single in the 5th.   Mollie Grant finally got the Prairie Wolves on the board with an RBI single to drive in Sydney Nickerson.  That would be the only run of the game for NWU.

Bailey Green took the loss on the mound allowing two runs in 1 2/3 innings of work.  Warneke pitched the final 4 1/3 innings striking out four and giving up one run.  Grant led the NWU offense going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

NWU broke out of their offensive slump in a big way against Penn St.-Altoona winning 8-0 in a game called after five innings due to the run rule.

The Prairie Wolves hit two home runs, including a 3-run blast by Alfieri in the 4th inning that put the game out of reach.  Mundt hit a solo home run earlier in the 4th inning.

Styskal got the scoring started with a two-run double in the 1st inning to drive in Meyer and Alfieri.  They got the final two runs on a two-run single by Grant in the 5th inning.

Kailey Meyer got the complete game shutout win on the mound striking out five and giving up only two hits in five innings.  Alfieri was 2-for-3 with a HR and three RBI to lead the Prairie Wolves.
