Offense Leads NWU Softball to Pair of Victories

CLERMONT, Fla. – Nebraska Wesleyan scored 20 runs on Tuesday (March 10) as the Prairie Wolves posted a pair of big victories on their spring trip to Florida.  NWU defeated Penn State-Behrend 6-2, then blew out Northwestern (Minn.) 14-1 in five innings.
 
The Prairie Wolves have won three straight games and sit at 6-4 overall.  They are off on Wednesday then return to the diamond for six more games on their trip starting on Thursday.
 
In the win over Penn St-Behrend (0-5), the Prairie Wolves fell behind 2-0 after the first inning then scored six unanswered runs to earn the win.  The Prairie Wolves scored the one run in the second inning to cute the lead in half.
 
NWU took the lead in the fourth inning with a pair of runs with Emma Alfieri getting an RBI single.  The Prairie Wolves plated another run in the fifth inning, then put the game out of reach with two more runs in the sixth.
 
Kailey Meyer got the complete game victory for the Prairie Wolves allowing two earned runs and six hits.  Meyer also led NWU with two hits on offense, while Morgan Shipley also had two hits and scored two runs.
 
The Prairie Wolves scored eight runs in the first inning on their way to the easy 14-1 victory in five innings over Northwestern.  NWU posted eight hits in the first inning to erupt for their biggest inning of the season.
 
In the next inning, the Prairie Wolves kept the offense rolling scoring five more runs on four hits to make it 13-0.  NWU was able to add another run in the third inning as they finished the game with 14 total hits.
 
Four different Prairie Wolves had multi-hit performances.  Senior Morgan Shipley broke out of her early season offensive slump by going 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored.  Emma Alfieri continued her run producing ways with three RBI on two hits including a double.  Rachel Mundt was a perfect 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI, while Alycin Braun also drove in three runs.  Sydney Nickerson was the other NWU player with two hits in the contest.
 
Elise Warneke got the win on the mound pitching four scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
