STORM LAKE, Iowa –
Caitlin Navratil scored a game-high 31 points as the Nebraska Wesleyan women's basketball team snapped their seven-game losing streak with an 86-81 victory over Buena Vista University on Wednesday night (Jan. 29) in Storm Lake, Iowa.
NWU records their first win since Dec. 7 to improve to 6-11 overall and 3-7 in the A-R-C standings. Buena Vista has now lost 15 straight games to drop to 1-17 overall and 0-9 in conference.
The Prairie Wolves jumped out to a 54-35 halftime lead shooting 57.1 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Navratil scored 22 of her points in the first half, making 8-12 on her field goal attempts.
BVU made only 34.3 percent of their field goal attempts and just 4-14 on their 3-point attempts to fall behind.
Despite holding a 20-point advantage early in the 4
th quarter, the Prairie Wolves had to on late to preserve the victory. In the fourth quarter, the Beavers outscored NWU by 13 points and cut the lead down to four points in the final minute.
A long 3-pointer from BVU made it 83-79 in the final seconds. NWU was able to get a pair of free throws from
Jazmine Glenn to go back up by six points. BVU's leading scorer Erin Gerke did convert a field goal at the other end making it a four-point game once again.
Forced to foul, the Beavers sent Navratil to the line and she hit 1-2 to secure the victory.
Navratil was 12-23 from the floor and 7-8 at the free throw line to score her game-high 31 points. She pulled down five rebounds and tied for the team lead with three assists.
Two other NWU players reached double figures with
Jazmine Glenn scoring 11 points and
Mikenzie Delgado getting 10 points.
Sydney Skupa led the Prairie Wolves with 13 rebounds, while going 3-3 from the floor for seven points.
Gerke led the Beavers with 29 points, making 11-17 on her field goal attempts. Gerke had six assists and four rebounds. Destiny Einerwold posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
NWU will look to continue their winning ways on Saturday when they host the University of Dubuque to try and complete the season sweep of the Spartans.
