MOORHEAD, Minn. – For the fourth straight match to start the season the Nebraska Wesleyan women's soccer team held their opponent scoreless in a blowout 6-0 victory over Northland College on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 8) in the Cobber Invite in Moorhead, Minn.
NWU remains undefeated on the season at 4-0 overall and the Prairie Wolves women have yet to allow an opponent to score a goal this season. The Prairie Wolves have outscored the opposition 21-0 in four matches this year.
The 4-0 start to the season is the best start for a NWU women's soccer team since 1998 when that team also began the year with four straight wins on their way to a 19-4 record.
Sunday's match was never close as the Prairie Wolves were by far the better team and had complete control of the match all day. NWU had 44 total shots attempts in the match while Northland (0-4) did not have one attempt all day.
Five of the goals were scored in the first 40 minutes of the match, then the Prairie Wolves put it on cruise control in the second half adding one more goal before boarding the bus with their undefeated record.
Suzie McDonald scored the first goal of the match just 2:40 into the game on an assist from
Annie Platt. In the 9
th minute,
Megan Cooper scored on another assist from Platt.
Platt continued her big offensive performance with back-to-back goals only one minute apart. Her first goal came in the 19
th minute off an assist from Cooper, then she scored again off an assist from
Jenna DeJonge. The final goal of the half was scored by
Hannah Rhodes in the 39
th minute.
In the second half, Sarah Thavenent scored the sixth goal of the match for the Prairie Wolves only goal of the day.
Liz Wolf was in goal for the first 45 minutes then
Leslie Borges completed the shutout playing the next 45 minutes.
NWU finally has their home opener on Friday when they host Wisconsin-Stevens at Abel Stadium.
