LINCOLN, Neb. --- Nebraska Wesleyan completed their successful home opening weekend on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 22) with a 2-1 victory over Cornell College at Abel Stadium.
NWU won both of their home matches this weekend to move to 5-2-1 overall. Cornell drops to 1-5-1 on the season.
Neither team was able to score in the first half with the score staying at 0-0 when the teams went to the locker room at halftime.
Right away in the second half the Prairie Wolves took the lead.
Thomas Distefano scored in the 48
th minute of an assist from
Ben Schulz and
Jackson McGowan to put the Prairie Wolves ahead 1-0.
Cornell was able to tie the match at 1-1 on a goal by Facundo Benavidez in the 56
th minute. With the match tied in the second half,
Nolan Dillon continued to display his goal scoring abilities with a header into the goal in the 66
th minute. He connected on the goal from a cross by
Royce Austen.
With the 2-1 lead, the Prairie Wolves were able to keep the Rams scoreless. Cornell had eight shot attempts in the second half, but NWU goalkeeper
Zachary Selph recorded four saves in the half to keep the Rams at bay.
NWU now prepares for another home match next Friday (Sept. 27) when they host Nebraska Christian College at Abel Stadium on Alumni Day.
