Box Score STERLING, Kan. –
Brandon Harper scored the game-winning goal in the first overtime period to lift Nebraska Wesleyan to a 5-4 thrilling victory over Sterling College on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 11) in men's soccer action in Sterling, Kan.
NWU led 2-0 then allowed the Warriors to score four unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead in the 2
nd half. Two goals by the Prairie Wolves in the final ten minutes, including one with only 12 seconds remaining set the match to overtime.
In the overtime period, Harper found himself with a shot right in front of the goal and he connected giving the Prairie Wolves the much needed win. His goal came in the 98
th minute with only 1:50 left in the first overtime.
Nolan Dillon got the scoring started for the Prairie Wolves with two first half goals as things were looking good for NWU. Dillon's first goal came in the 2
nd minute off an assist from
Aroque Bryant. Later in the 12
th minute, Dillon struck again this time on assists by
Tanner Wood and
Ben Schulz.
Sterling finally got on the scoreboard late in the first half making it 2-1 headed to the halftime break.
Ramon Lopez was the story of the second half as he scored a hat trick with three goals within an eight minute stretch to put Sterling ahead 4-2.
Harper ended the Lopez scoring streak to cut the Warrior lead in half in the 83
rd minute on an assist by
Royce Austen.
Still trailing by a goal with under one minute to play,
Ben Schulz was able to find the open net off an assist by Harper to stun the home team and sent the match to overtime.
NWU finished the match with 20 total shots, including 13 shots on goal. Sterling had 18 shots with 11 on goal.
The Prairie Wolves will enjoy the victory that moves their record back to even at 2-2-1 overall. They are next in action on Sunday at Westminster College.
