LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan picked up their biggest win of the season on Saturday (April 6) as the Prairie Wolves upset #7 Coe College 10-0 in game two of an American Rivers Conference softball doubleheader at Seng Park. The Kohawks won the first game of the doubleheader 7-3.
NWU moves to 18-6 on the year, 3-1 in A-R-C play. They handed Coe their first conference loss of the year and only the fourth loss of the year. The Kohawks are now 25-4 overall and had their 8-game winning streak snapped.
Not only did Nebraska Wesleyan upset Coe, they ran away from the Kohawks in a shutout that was ended after five innings due to the run rule.
The Prairie Wolves scored three runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning with three hits and two Coe errors. Alycia Perrien doubled to lead off the inning then
Taylor Styskal singled. A fielding error allowed Perrien to score then
Morgan Shipley reached on an error allowing Styskal to score.
Meredith Poppe singled to center field to drive in
Sydney Nickerson but a fourth run was denied as Shipley was thrown out at the plate.
In the 3rd inning, NWU registered four straight hits to start the frame. Perrien hit an RBI single, then
Destiny Indra bounced a hit up the middle that scored two runs. NWU held a 6-0 lead heading into the 4th inning.
The biggest inning of the game was the bottom of the 4th as the first two batters reached on a walk and hit batter. Another hit batter loaded the bases for
Taylor Styskal. Styskal delivered the biggest blow crushing a grand slam over the left field fence.
Kailey Meyer shut down the Kohawks on the mound pitching a complete game shutout. Meyer struck out five and allowed only three hits.
Four different NWU players had two hits in the game.
Game one was controlled by Coe as they limited the Prairie Wolves to four hits and took advantage of three NWU errors.
The Kohawks scored four unearned runs in the 4th inning and five total runs to take the lead in the top of the inning. NWU was able to score one run in the 4th inning as
Kailey Meyer doubled over the centerfielder's head to drive in
Payton Swanson with the first hit of the game for NWU.
Danelle Snyder belted a 2-run home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the 7th to account for the other two NWU runs.
Coe pitcher Alyssa Olson got the complete game victory to move to 15-1 on the year. She struck out nine NWU batters.
Grace Sommer took the loss for the Prairie Wolves allowing five runs, one earned in 3 2/3 innings.
