LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan extended its winning streak to five games at the Prairie Wolves swept a softball doubleheader over old conference rival Doane University on Tuesday night (April 2) at Seng Park in Lincoln. NWU won game one 4-1 then took the nightcap 10-5.
The games were originally scheduled to be played in Crete but were moved to Lincoln due to field conditions. Nebraska Wesleyan has now won five in a row and 11 of their last 12 to improve to 17-5 overall. Doane drops to 11-15.
Doane scored first in game one taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the 3
rd inning. That would be the only run the Tigers scored in the opening game.
NWU answered with two runs in the bottom of the 3
rd inning.
Morgan Shipley singled and stole second base. She then scored on a double by
Rachel Mundt to tie the game at 1-1. Mundt came around to score on an RBI single from
Danelle Snyder to take a 2-1 lead.
The Prairie Wolves added to their lead in the 5
th inning when Shipley singled again and scored on an error by the Tigers outfield. Snyder doubled and
Payton Swanson drove her in with an RBI single.
Grace Sommer got the win on the mound to improve to 8-1 on the season. Sommer allowed one earned run on five hits in six innings of work.
Kailey Meyer got her fourth save of the year pitching a scoreless 7
th inning.
Shipley, Snyder and
Alicia Perrien each had two hits to lead the Prairie Wolves offense.
In game two, the Prairie Wolves pounded out 11 total hits and rolled to a 10-5 victory. NWU scored in five of the six innings and had seven different players record hits.
Just like game one, Doane scored first as they plated two runs in the top of the 1
st inning. NWU responded with two runs in the bottom of the 1
st inning. Swanson and Perrien each had RBI singles in the inning.
Four Prairie Wolves scored in the bottom of the 2
nd inning as NWU broke the game open. Snyder had a two-run single and Swanson also drove in two runs with a hit.
Doane was able to cut the lead in half in the top of the 3
rd inning making it 6-4.
Alycin Braun hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 4
th for the Prairie Wolves to put NWU ahead by three. They went up by four runs in the 5
th inning when Snyder had another RBI single.
Meredith Poppe hit a two-run double in the bottom of the 6
th inning for the final two runs.
Kailey Meyer pitched the final 3 2/3 innings to get the win for the Prairie Wolves. She allowed one run on three hits.
Snyder was 2-3 with three RBI and Swanson was 2-4 with three RBI to lead the Prairie Wolves offense. Shipley also had two hits and two stolen bases in game two.
NWU now prepares for a showdown with nationally-ranked Coe College on Saturday at Seng Park.
