LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Wesleyan men's tennis team picked up their second conference dual victory of the season on Friday afternoon (April 19) defeating Simpson College 5-4 at Woods Park in Lincoln.
With the victory, the Prairie Wolves move into sixth place in the American Rivers Conference standings and put themselves into position to qualify for the A-R-C Postseason Tournament.
The dual between NWU and Simpson was the most evenly matched of the season. To start off in doubles action, all three were very highly competitive. Simpson took two out of three dual matches to get out to a 2-1 lead.
Nathan Seaton and
Jared Scherling won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles for the only Prairie Wolves victory.
At No. 1 doubles, the Storm tandem of Zach Nelson and Reade Reiter edged NWU's
Gabriel Sellmer and Spender Anderson, 8-7 (7-4). The Storm also won at No. 3 doubles 8-6.
Singles play is where the Prairie Wolves made their move winning four of the six matches, two of which went three sets.
Scherling won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to complete his solid day.
Matt Errett also won in straight sets defeating Karson Richardson 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
The top two players on both teams met at No. 1 and No. 2 singles and both matches were three set events. Sellmer rallied back to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, then Anderson did the same rallying for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles to seal the victory for the Prairie Wolves.
NWU has two more American Rivers Conference matches this weekend facing University of Dubuque and Loras College on Saturday (April 27) in Dubuque, Iowa.
