LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team got the conference season off to a terrific start as the Prairie Wolves swept Loras College in an American Rivers Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon (March 31) at Seng Park. NWU won game one 2-1, then took the second game 3-2.
Loras scored a run in the top of the 1
st inning in the opening game but that was the only run of the game for the Duhawks. NWU pitcher
Grace Sommer shut down the Loras bats to earn her seventh victory of the year.
NWU tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the 3
rd inning.
Morgan Shipley doubled then came around to score on a wild pitch. The Prairie Wolves broke open the tie game in the bottom of the 6
th inning. NWU loaded the bases on three straight walks.
Danelle Snyder was able to score the eventual game-winning run scoring on a wild pitch.
Sommer got the complete game victory on the mound allowing one earned run on six hits with three strikeouts.
Nebraska Wesleyan had only three hits in the game but did walk five times. Shipley,
Payton Swanson and
Kayla Prai each had hits for the Prairie Wolves.
In the second game the Prairie Wolves were limited to only four hits, while Loras had 10 hits but the Prairie Wolves were able to produce one big inning.
Just like game one, Loras scored a run in the top of the 1
st inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The Duhawks would not score again until the top of the 7
th inning.
The Prairie Wolves big inning came in the bottom of the 4
th inning. Shipley and Snyder each had RBI singles and
Rachel Mundt drove in
Alycin Braun with a fielder's choice.
Kailey Meyer won the second game on the mound for her seventh win of the year. Meyer gave up two earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts.
Shipley was 2-4 with an RBI to lead the Prairie Wolves offense. NWU also took advantage of five Loras errors in the second game.
Nebraska Wesleyan moved to 15-5 overall and 2-0 in American Rivers Conference play.
