CLERMONT, Fla. – On day three of their spring trip, the Nebraska Wesleyan softball team split a pair of games on Wednesday (March 13) in Florida. NWU defeated Staten Island 6-0 to start the day then lost 10-0 to Mount Union.
The Prairie Wolves now sit at 6-4 overall through the first ten games of the year. NWU has six more games to play on the spring trip.
Grace Sommer pitched a six-hit complete game shutout to lead the Prairie Wolves in the victory over Staten Island. Sommer was very sharp on the mound with four strikeouts and no walks to shutout COSI in their first game of the year.
NWU scored three runs in the top of the 1
st inning to set the tone early in the morning. The Prairie Wolves took advantage of an error and three passed balls to score three runs.
Payton Swanson also added an RBI single in the inning.
In the 2
nd inning,
Destiny Indra doubled to start the inning and would come around to score on a wild pitch. The Prairie Wolves scored two runs in the top of the 5
th inning to complete the victory.
Meredith Poppe hit a sacrifice fly and
Ashlee Mayorga got an RBI single to drive in the two runs.
Nebraska Wesleyan ended the game with eight hits on the day.
Morgan Shipley continued her hot start to the year going 2-3 with a run scored, while Indra was 2-3 with a double and a run.
The three-game winning streak was snapped in the second game of the day with Mount Union shutting out the Prairie Wolves 10-0 in five innings.
UMT scored all five runs in the top of the 5
th inning to end the game due to the run rule.
Kailey Meyer held the opposition to only two hits through the first four innings, but then the Raiders erupted in the 5
th inning.
Mount Union had eight hits and took advantage of two NWU errors in the 5
th inning. A grand slam by Maggie Dominick and 3-run triple from Emily Hume were the big hits of the day.
NWU managed only three hits during the game, all singles.
