MINNEOLA, Florida – The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team continued to add to their win total on Thursday (March 14) by picking up a pair of victories. NWU shutout Northwestern University (Minn.) 2-0, then won 7-3 over Utica in the second game of the day.
Nebraska Wesleyan is now 8-4 on the season with four more games remaining on their Florida trip. The Prairie Wolves take Friday off, then return to action on Saturday and Sunday with two games each day.
Kailey Meyer threw a six-hit complete game shutout in the opening game of the day against Nortwestern-St. Paul. Meyer struck out five and walked none to move to 5-3 on the season.
The Prairie Wolves scored their only two runs of the game in the first inning and that was all they would need to support Meyer in the win.
Payton Swanson hit a two-run single to drive in
Meredith Poppe and
Danelle Snyder in the bottom of the 1
st inning. NWU had only four hits the rest of the game but it was still enough to earn the win.
Swanson was 2-3 with two RBI and
Alycin Braun also had two hits on the day.
In game two against Utica, both teams scored multiple runs in the opening inning then it was one big inning from the Prairie Wolves that was the difference. Utica led 3-2 after one inning and maintained the lead until the 4
th inning when NWU erupted for five runs. That gave the Prairie Wolves the 7-3 victory.
The Prairie Wolves got the scoring started early in the 1
st inning as
Danelle Snyder hit a 2-run double to continue her productive start to the season. Utica responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning on three hits to take a 3-2 lead.
Seven hits in the 5
th inning allowed the Prairie Wolves to plate five runs. Two doubles and three singles occurred with NWU batting around in the inning.
Ashlee Mayorga started the party by leading off with a double. Poppe then had an RBI single to put two runners on for Snyder who drove one in with a double.
Alicia Perrien drove in two runs with a single and the final RBI was on a single by
Alycin Braun.
NWU ended the game with 15 total hits, led by
Morgan Shipley who was 4-5. Snyder was 2-5 with two doubles and three RBI. Swanson, Braun and
Kayla Prai also each had two hits.
Grace Sommer earned the win on the mound pitching six innings giving up three runs and six hits.
