KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team opened their 12-game spring break trip on Monday (March 11) with an easy 12-0 victory over Worcester State, then dropped a 7-4 decision to Washington University (Mo.) in the second game of the day.
NWU racked up 12 hits and held Worcester State to only three hits in the game that was ended after five innings due to the run rule. The Prairie Wolves scored two runs in the 1
st inning, then went off for five runs in both the 2
nd and 3
rd innings to run away with the victory.
Kailey Meyer threw the first three innings on the mound holding Worcester St scoreless and striking out four batters.
Grace Sommer then pitched the final two innings and did not give up a hit.
Danelle Snyder had a big day at the plate going 2-3 with a double and three RBI to lead the Prairie Wolves.
Alicia Perrien was 3-3 with a double and one RBI, while
Morgan Shipley was 2-2 with three runs scored as the lead-off batter.
Wash U. jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second game and NWU was never able to recover. The Lady Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the 2
nd inning and plated four more in the bottom of the 4
th.
NWU did score two runs in the top of the 7
th inning but the rally was too late. Four errors were the story of the game for the Prairie Wolves as they committed one error in the 2
nd inning then had two in the 4
th to allow the Lady Bears to have big innings.
Snyder went 2-4 with a double and two RBI and
Kayla Prai was 2-4 with an RBI as the only Prairie Wolves that had multi-hit performances.
Kailey Meyer took the loss on the mound allowing five earned runs and nine hits in six innings. Meyer struck out seven batters and walked three.
The Prairie Wolves will play two games on five of the next six days.
