2nd Overtime Game-Winner Lifts NWU Women to 2-1 Victory Over Central

LINCOLN, Neb. – Kaitlyn Sullivan scored the game-winning goal in second overtime to lift Nebraska Wesleyan University past Central College, 2-1, in American Rivers Conference women's soccer action on a rainy Wednesday night (Oct. 9) at Abel Stadium.

Sullivan converted a free kick in the 105th minute to give the Prairie Wolves the emotional 2-1 home victory.

With the win, Nebraska Wesleyan moves to 11-1 overall, already their highest win total since 2006.  NWU is 2-0 in American Rivers play to stay on top of the league standings.  Central moves to the bottom of the standings at 0-3 in league play and 5-6-1 overall.

Neither team was able to score in the first 45 minutes of the match as the Dutch and Prairie Wolves were tied 0-0 at halftime.

In the second half, the Prairie Wolves finally got on the scoreboard when they converted off a corner kick in the 52nd minute.  Jenna DeJonge received the ball after it had been kicked around and she shot it hard into the back of the net.

The match looked to be in control in favor of the Prairie Wolves when regulation was closing out.  However, with time running out Central was awarded a penalty kick in the 86th minute.  Cate Christopherson was able to convert the kick to tie the match at 1-1.

That goal sent the match into overtime.  In the opening overtime period the rain began picking up so neither team was able to get a good shot attempt at goal.  With both teams being held scoreless, the match went into a second overtime period.

Sullivan was able to capitalize on her free kick opportunity in the 105th minute to give the Prairie Wolves a seventh straight victory.

NWU will look to keep the momentum rolling on Saturday when they host Wartburg College in a meeting between two regionally-ranked teams.
