LINCOLN, Neb. – Wartburg College came into Abel Stadium and handed the Nebraska Wesleyan University women's soccer team their first American Rivers Conference loss of the season on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 12) taking down the Prairie Wolves 2-0 in a key league matchup.
In a matchup of two teams ranked in the North Regional rankings, it was the Knights that were able to come out on top. Wartburg, which is receiving votes in the NCAA III Top 25 poll, moves to 2-1-1 overall in American Rivers Conference play to sit 2
nd in the league standings.
NWU drops just their second match of the year to fall to 11-2 overall and 2-1 in the A-R-C falling to third in the conference standings.
The two goals allowed were the most given up by the Prairie Wolves all season. NWU had allowed only three goals in the previous 12 matches. Both of the Prairie Wolves losses this year they have been shutout.
Wartburg controlled the match outshooting NWU 16-3 scoring one goal in each half.
Joy Smith got the scoring started in the 38
th minute to put the Knights on the board. The 1-0 advantage would remain the score at halftime.
In the second half, Wartburg scored again when Gabby Rohrer converted a penalty kick in the 68
th minute.
Nebraska Wesleyan will try to put this loss behind them and prepare for their next match on Oct. 15 at Coe College.
