LINCOLN, Neb. – Loras College was able to celebrate on Nebraska Wesleyan's home turf on Saturday when the Duhawks defeated the Prairie Wolves 3-0 to claim the 2019 American Rivers Conference regular season championship.
Loras ended the regular season at 7-1 in conference play, while NWU drops to 3-4 with one more match remaining.
Both teams entered Saturday's match with identical 12-4 overall records. Loras jumped ahead early scoring right away in the 3
rd minute to set the tone of the match. Brynn Jacobi scored on a header off a corner kick by Payton McConnell giving the Duhawks the 1-0 advantage.
Later in the 1
st half the same Duhawk combo struck again, this time it was McConnell scoring the goal and McDonnell dishing out the assist in the 13
th minute. That made the score 2-0 which would hold up until halftime.
Loras added another goal in the 53
rd minute when Ryleigh O'Brien found the open net.
The Prairie Wolves had only four shot attempts on the day with just one shot on goal as Loras controlled the ball in the NWU side of the field the majority of the match.
Nebraska Wesleyan closes out the 2019 regular season on Tuesday night with a match at Simpson College. The Prairie Wolves are playing to earn a spot in the conference postseason tournament.
