LINCOLN, Neb. -- It took less than a minute for the Prairie Wolves to score and that was all the Nebraska Wesleyan women's soccer team would need to shutout Buena Vista University 3-0 in American Rivers Conference action on Wednesday night (Oct. 23) at Abel Stadium.
NWU snaps their three-match losing streak to improve to 12-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play moving them up to fifth in the league standings with two matches to play. The 12 victories are the most by a NWU women's soccer team since 2006 when they won 13.
Olivia Munroe got the scoring started right away as she found the back of the net only 37 seconds into the match. Monroe's shot got past the goalkeeper and snuck through the left side of the goal.
Just a few minutes later, senior
Kaitlyn Sullivan fired a goal past the goalkeeper from straight on off a give and go with
Annie Platt. Sullivan's goal in the 6
th minute put the Prairie Wolves ahead 2-0.
With less than five minutes remaining before halftime, the Prairie Wolves struck again when
Sabrina Ochterbeck completed a breakaway into a wide open net off a beautiful pass from
Hannah Rhodes.
The score was 3-0 at halftime and that would be the final score. NWU had plenty of more scoring opportunities in the second half with seven shots on goal, but the Beavers were able to shut down the Prairie Wolves.
Nebraska Wesleyan ended the match with 26 total shot attempts, compared to only four by the Beavers.
NWU now prepares for their final home match of the season on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 26) when they host Loras College. The Duhawks could clinch the regular season conference title with a win, while NWU wants to post a win to try and keep their hopes alive to host a conference tournament match.
