LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan improved to 2-0 to start the 2018 soccer season as the Prairie Wolves won a match for the second straight day when they shutout Sterling College 2-0 on Monday afternoon (Sept. 3) at Abel Stadium.
The Prairie Wolves (2-0) scored an early goal and another in the final minute to post their first shutout of the season. NWU outshot Sterling 12-4 on the day as the Prairie Wolves limited the opposition to just one shot on goal.
Ben Schulz got the scoring started in the 7
th minute as he scored on a header off an assist by
David Zink. That early goal would be the eventual game-winning goal. The score remained 1-0 at halftime as Sterling (0-2-1) had only two shots in the first half.
It appeared that the final score would be 1-0 but with just seconds remaining
Alex Day scored his first goal of the season on a shot inside the box. That was the icing on the cake to cap off a successful opening weekend of soccer for the Prairie Wolves.
Zac Collins recorded the shutout in goal for the Prairie Wolves with one save.
NWU will look to keep the early season momentum going next weekend when they travel to Minnesota to face Crown College on Sept. 8.
