Chargers Pull Away from Prairie Wolves in Second Half

LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan scored a goal in the opening minutes of the match, but Briar Cliff reeled off four unanswered goals as the Chargers came into Abel Stadium and defeated the Prairie Wolves 4-1 in a non-conference men's soccer matchup on Monday night (Sept. 24).

The two former conference foes each scored within the first five minutes of the match as it appeared to be a high scoring affair.  Both teams then settled in and it was the Chargers that maintained the offensive advantage in the second half as they scored three additional goals in the final 45 minutes.

Aaron Onion got the scoring started for the Prairie Wolves as he scored in the 3rd minute to put NWU up early.  Just over one minute later, Vilmer Gimbringer of Briar Cliff responded with a goal to tie it at 1-1.  The score remained 1-1 at intermission.

In the second half, Briar Cliff added a goal from Rodrigo Oliveria in the 54th minute and another from Bruno Takeda in the 59th minute to take a two-goal advantage.  The Chargers added one final goal in the 85th minute as Prichard Sibanda scored on a penalty kick.

NWU had ten total shot attempts in the match, but only three on goal as they have struggled recently offensively.  The Prairie Wolves have just three goals in their past five matches.

Briar Cliff, which improved to 3-3-1 overall, had 17 total shots in the match with 10 shots on goal.  Samuel Lesoing had two saves as the starting goalkeeper, then Will Phillips took over for the next 66 minutes in goal and had four saves allowing three goals.

The Prairie Wolves will look to rebound this Saturday (Sept. 29) when they travel to Dubuque, Iowa to face Loras College in American Rivers Conference play.
