LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan went toe-to-toe with nationally-ranked Luther College for almost the entire match but the Norse scored a goal with just over five minutes remaining to earn a 1-0 victory in the American Rivers Conference men's soccer opener for both teams on Saturday night (Sept. 22) at Abel Stadium in Lincoln, Neb.
Rafael Broseghini scored the game-winner in the 84
th minute to lift the 20
th-ranked Norse to the shutout victory.
NWU withstood most of the early Luther scoring threats as Samuel Lesoing recorded six saves in goal for the Prairie Wolves. Luther had 17 total shots in the match, compared to just seven for the Prairie Wolves.
The Prairie Wolves fall to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play with Luther moving to 8-1 and 1-0 in conference play. The Norse were the team that won knocked the Prairie Wolves out of the conference tournament last year in the semifinals then went on to win the tournament title.
In the highly competitive match, the Prairie Wolves were given five yellow cards, while Luther did not have any.
NWU will have a chance to rebound on Monday night when they host Briar Cliff University in a non-conference match at Abel Stadium.
