LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan salvaged the last game of the series as the Prairie Wolves defeated Luther College, 12-9, on Senior Day Saturday (April 28) at NWU Field in Lincoln. The Norse won the first game of the day, 10-5 in 10 innings as they scored five runs in extra innings to earn the win.
NWU scored four runs in the bottom of the 3
rd inning to take the lead in game two as
Bradyn Thomas hit a 3-run double making the score 7-5. Luther responded with three runs in the top of the 5
th inning to grab back the lead.
In the bottom of the 5
th,
Nick Bruno hit an RBI single to drive in
Micah Hoage to tie the game at 8-8. The Norse scored a run in the 6
th inning to regain the lead, but NWU plated four runs in the bottom of the inning to get the lead back and earn the victory. Thomas had an RBI single, Hoage hit an RBI double and
Joel Maxwell hit a 2-run double.
The Prairie Wolves finished with 16 hits in the second game, but also committed six errors.
Joel Maxwell was a perfect 4-4 at the plate with two doubles and three RBI.
Bradyn Thomas was 3-4 with a double and four RBI.
Tyler Winterstein,
Owen Gubbels and
Cole Schumacher also each had two hits in the game.
Riley Ward started the game pitching 4 2/3 innings allowing eight runs.
Sam Condello earned the win throwing 1 1/3 innings.
In the opening game,
Matt Orozco hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 9
th inning to tie the game at 5-5 and send it to extra innings. Luther then had five hits in the top of the 10
th inning to break it open and earn the win.
The game was scoreless for the first five innings as
Brody Murphy of NWU and Tyler Boesel of Luther were in a pitching dual. Luther finally got the scoring started in the top of the 6
th inning with two runs.
NWU responded with three runs in the bottom of the 6
th inning as
Jared Scdoris doubled to drive in two runs and Maxwell hit an RBI single.
Luther regained the lead with two runs in the 7
th inning, then NWU tied it back up at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning as Winterstein hit an RBI single.
Murphy threw seven innings on senior day, allowing four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Winterstein, Bruno, Ward and Orozco all had two hits on the day.
Nebraska Wesleyan will finish the season next weekend with a three-game series at University of Dubuque.
