INDIANOLA, Iowa – Simpson College won a pair of one-run games over Nebraska Wesleyan in Iowa Conference softball action on Saturday afternoon (April 21) in Indianola, Iowa.
The Storm scored two runs in the bottom of the 7
th inning to rally back for a 2-1 win in the first game. In game two Simpson scored a run in the bottom of the 6
th to break open a tie game to earn another 2-1 victory.
In the opening contest, neither team scored a run through the first six innings of play.
Katie Stanzel then led off the 7
th inning with a single. Pinch runner
Kayla Prai moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt.
Kennedy Greene put the Prairie Wolves ahead with a single to right field driving in Prai and putting NWU on top with a 1-0 lead.
An NWU error started the bottom of the 7
th as the Storm put the tying run on base. A failed sacrifice attempt kept the runner at first with one out. An infield single put two runners on base, but a fielder's choice nabbed the lead runner at third base and had the Prairie Wolves one out away from a win. A walk loaded the based bringing up one of the hottest hitters in the IIAC. She hit a ball to second base that got through the legs of the fielder allowing two runners to score and give the Storm the win.
NWU had only five hits on the day as
Katie Stanzel was 2-3 to lead the way.
Kailey Meyer took the loss on the mound but did not give up an earned run allowing just four hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Simpson made big plays to earn the 2-1 victory in the second game as well. The Storm took an early 1-0 lead in the 1
st inning. A single and stolen base put a runner at second base, then another single allowed the run to score as the runner intentionally got in a rundown between first and second to get the runner home.
NWU tied the game in the 3
rd inning as
Morgan Shipley reached on an error then came in to score on a ground out by
Maddy Ethen.
Simpson took the 2-1 lead scoring a run in the bottom of the 6
th inning. NWU looked primed to tie the game in the top of the 7
th.
Nicole Vana singled and moved to second on a sacrifice by Shipley.
Jordan Arndt then singled and moved to second on the throw putting runners on 2
nd an 3
rd with just one out.
Danelle Snyder laced a ball up the middle but second baseman Madi Bennet dove to her right and made a highlight reel catch to rob Snyder of extra bases. A flyout then ended the game with the tying run at third.
NWU also outhit the Storm in game two but they stranded 10 runners on base. Arndt was 3-4 to lead the Prairie Wolves offense.
LeighAnn Novotny took the loss going 5 2/3 innings allowing one earned run with five strikeouts.
