DECORAH, Iowa – Playing their first home game of the season, 9
th-ranked Luther College avoided Nebraska Wesleyan's upset bid by hitting a 2-run walkoff home run in the bottom of the 7
th inning to give the Norse a 4-2 victory over the Prairie Wolves in Iowa Conference softball action. Luther completed the sweep with a 8-3 win in game two.
NWU is now 18-16 overall and 5-7 in IIAC play as they have dropped five straight games to slide into a tie for 6
th in the league standings. Luther is 27-3 and 5-1 in IIAC.
Jordan Arndt hit a solo HR in the top of the 6
th inning to give the Prairie Wolves a 2-1 advantage. Luther tied the game back up in the bottom half of the inning scoring an unearned run. In the 7
th inning, Ashley Burrows led off with a single then after a strikeout, Natalie Stockman hit the game-winning home run.
The Prairie Wolves took the early 1-0 lead as
Maddy Ethen was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a single by
Alycin Braun. NWU was held to just four total hits in the game,
Kailey Meyer pitched the first six innings of the game allowing seven hits and two runs, one unearned. She struck out three and walked one.
LeighAnn Novotny pitched the 7
th inning and took the loss.
In the second game, NWU jumped out to another early lead.
Nicole Vana walked to start the game and scored on an RBI single by Arndt. She moved to second on the throw and would score on a single from
Danelle Snyder.
Luther exploded for five runs in the bottom of the 3
rd inning to break open the game. They had five hits in the inning. The Norse scored two more runs in the bottom of the 4
th for a 7-2 advantage.
NWU would score in the 5
th inning as
Morgan Shipley singled and scored on a double by Arndt.
The Prairie Wolves return home for the final home game of the season on Wednesday when they host nationally-ranked Central College.
