LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan rallied back from a five run deficit to force extra innings, then the Prairie Wolves completed the comeback with four more runs in the 9
th inning in a 10-9 victory over Buena Vista in game one of a Iowa Conference softball doubleheader. BVU came back to win the nightcap 7-3.
BVU led 6-1 heading to the bottom of the 6
th inning when the Prairie Wolves began the comeback. Singles by
Katie Stanzel and
Destiny Indra opened the inning then
Nicole Vana was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. A fielder's choice brought in one run, then
Jordan Arndt singled to bring in one more run.
Maddy Ethen completed the inning with an RBI allowing two runs to score.
NWU still trailed by one run in the bottom of the 7
th and was down to their last out. Stanzel singled to lead off the inning and to third base with two outs. Vana hit a soft liner to the 2
nd baseman who had it in her glove then dropped it allowing the tying run to score and extend the game.
Neither team scored in the 8
th sending it another frame. BVU was able to score three unearned runs in the top of the inning and appeared to have the game under their belt.
Once again the Prairie Wolves rallied.
Morgan Shipley and
Jordan Arndt each had RBI singles then NWU tied the game when
Danelle Snyder hit a fielder's choice to second base and
Nicole Vana beat out the throw home. The game ended when
Maddy Ethen flew out deep to right field driving in Shipley with the game winner.
Both teams finished with 13 hits and the teams had a combined nine errors. NWU stranded 14 runners and BVU left 12 on.
Jordan Arndt was 3-5 with two RBI to lead the NWU offense. Shipley was 2-5 with three RBI and Vana was 2-5. Indra and Stanzel also each had two hits.
Kailey Meyer got the victory on the mound to move to 11-4. She started the game, then
LeighAnn Novotny pitched 3 2/3 innings before Meyer closed out the game.
Game two was tied at 2-2 after three innings. BVU scored two in the top of the 3
rd, then the Prairie Wolves answered.
Shipley singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch, then
Danelle Snyder singled to left to drive in Arndt who had doubled.
BVU took the lead with one run in the 5
th then broke the game open scoring four runs on five hits in the 6
th inning.
NWU had only seven hits in the second game with Shipley and Snyder each recording two hits.
Jessie Briley started the game throwing the first three innings. Novotny pitched 2 1/3 innings and took the loss.
The Prairie Wolves are now 18-12 overall and 5-3 in IIAC play. NWU will have two more IIAC doubleheaders on the road this coming weekend.
