DES MOINES, Iowa – Nebraska Wesleyan earned their first men's tennis conference victory of the 2018 season as they defeated Simpson College 7-2 on Sunday in a match played at Des Moines, Iowa. Earlier in the weekend the Prairie Wolves dropped two IIAC matches falling 9-0 at both Luther College and Wartburg College.
The Prairie Wolves now sit at 1-5 in Iowa Conference play and move to 3-14 overall. With two IIAC dual matches remaining the Prairie Wolves still have a chance at finishing in the top six to earn a spot in the postseason tournament.
In the victory over Simpson, NWU started the match on a good note winning two of three doubles matches.
Jordan Pieper and
Nathan Seaton won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles with
Jared Scherling and
Caleb Thiessen winning 8-5 at No. 3 singles. The Storm won the No. 1 doubles match 8-5 over
Adam Olson and
Hale Breit.
Leading 2-1 starting singles play, the Prairie Wolves were able to run away with the match winning five of the six matches.
Adam Olson rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 1 spot, with
Hale Breit winning 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. NWU also got two set victories at No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
Jordan Pieper won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 and
Jared Scherling was a 6-3, 6-4 winner at No. 5 spot.
The closest match of the day was No. 6 singles as
Caleb Thiessen won 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 over Reade Reiter.
Against both Luther and Wartburg, the Prairie Wolves were shut out 9-0 on Saturday.
