LAKELAND, Fla. – Nebraska Wesleyan baseball dropped a pair of close games on their second day of the spring break trip to Florida as the Prairie Wolves fell 7-5 to SUNY Poly in the opener, then fell 16-15 in a wild game to close the doubleheader.
In the opening game, NWU jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as
Tyler Winterstein doubled and eventually scored on a passed ball. The lead didn't last long as SUNY Poly scored six unanswered runs to take a 6-1 lead in the top of the 3
rd.
The Prairie Wolves plated one run in the 3
rd and another in the 6
th inning to make the score 7-3 heading into the 7
th inning. NWU made one last push in the final frame as
Jared Scdoris singled and
Owen Gubbels walked. Winterstein drove in both runners with a single to right field. The threat was then ended on a strikeout.
SUNY Poly finished with 10 hits in the game, compared to five for the Prairie Wolves. Two of the NWU hits were extra base hits as Winterstein and
Matt Orozco both doubled.
Sam Condello took the loss on the mound allowing six earned runs and seven hits in three innings.
Game two was a three and a half marathon that featured 31 runs, 30 hits and 14 total walks between the two teams.
NWU scored in each of the first four innings, including a huge seven run 3
rd inning to go ahead 12-7. SUNY Poly also scored in each of their first four at-bats piling up nine runs.
Matt Orozco had a big 2-run double in the 1
st inning, then
Owen Gubbels hit a 2-run double in the 2
nd inning. In the seven run 3
rd inning, Winterstein hit a two-run triple, while Orozco,
Justus Stocks and
Bradyn Thomas each getting a 1-run single. Gubbels also had the big hit in the 4
th inning with a two-run single to left field.
The only other run scored by the Prairie Wolves was in the 6
th inning when Orozco drove in Gubbels with a single. That put NWU ahead 15-11 after five and a half innings. SUNY Poly scored two in the bottom of the inning to pull within one run.
Tucker McHugh came in to pitch the 7
th for the Prairie Wolves and promptly struck out the first two batters. A single and walk put two runners on, then SUNY Poly tied the game with an RBI single. McHugh struck out the next batter, but the throw down to first base was errant allowing the game-winning run to score.
Gubbels had a huge day at the plate for the Prairie Wolves going 5-5 with a double, four RBI and three runs scored. Orozco went 3-4 with a double and four RBI and Winterstein drove in two runs with a triple.
NWU used six total pitchers that allowed 16 total hits and walked six with nine strikeouts.
