LINCOLN, Neb. – Midland University snapped Nebraska Wesleyan's six-game winning streak with a 91-61 victory over the Prairie Wolves on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 30) at Snyder Arena in Lincoln.
The Warriors, ranked No. 24 in the latest NAIA II Top 25 poll, jumped ahead by 12 points in the first quarter and never let the Prairie Wolves rally.
NWU (7-4) pulled within five points in the second quarter but the Warriors responded with a 14-2 run to lead by 16 at halftime. The Prairie Wolves went over four minutes without a point in the second quarter as Midland got back up by double digits.
In the third quarter, NWU pulled within 11 points and had a chance to get within single digits but a 3-pointer was off the mark and Midland went on a run. The Warriors scored 10 straight points to get ahead by 21 points and that was too big of a lead to cut into.
Midland was dominant on the glass with a +15 advantage in rebounding, including 19 offensive rebounds. Maddie Egr had a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds to lead Midland.
Nebraska Wesleyan was led by
Klaire Phillips who scored a career-high 21 points going 4-5 from 3-point range. She was 6-10 from the field and 5-6 at the free throw line before fouling out.
Caitlin Navratil was the other player in double figures with 14 points on just 6-17 shooting.
The Prairie Wolves return to American Rivers Conference play on Wednesday when they travel to Buena Vista.
