Wolves Run Past Johnson & Wales for First Win

DENVER, Colo. --- Nebraska Wesleyan jumped out to an 11-0 lead and cruised to a 79-54 victory over Johnson & Wales to pick up their first win of the 2018-19 season on Sunday afternoon in Denver.  The Prairie Wolves women begin the season with a 1-1 record during the opening weekend.
 
NWU led 22-6 at the end of the 1st quarter as they shot 50 percent from the field and held Johnson & Wales to just 1-12 shooting.  They extended the lead to 37-18 at halftime and would outscore the host school in every quarter on the day.
 
The Prairie Wolves shot 44.9 percent from the floor for the game, making 9-26 from 3-point range and 8-12 at the free throw line.  J&W was only 18-69 from the field hitting 8-38 from 3-point land.
 
Four NWU women were able to reach double figures in scoring as they had a balanced offensive attack.  After being outrebounded and dominated in the paint on Saturday, NWU responded on Sunday afternoon to pull down 54 rebounds in the game compared to 39 for Johnson & Wales.  The Prairie Wolves also outscored J&W 24-10 in the paint.
 
Senior Bailey Hallgren Meehan scored 17 points to pace the Prairie Wolves.  She was 7-11 from the field to pour in 17 points in only 17 minutes of action.  Caitlin Navratil score 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds in only 18 minutes on the floor.
 
Klaire Phillips scored 10 points with eight rebounds and Sydney Skupa came off the bench to also score 10 points.  Freshman Carsyn Zumpfe scored nine points and led the team with nine rebounds.
 
Katey Guzman scored 15 points to lead Johnson & Wales, while Dominique Riley had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
