LINCOLN, Neb. –
Alex Day scored two goals, one in each half, to give the Nebraska Wesleyan men's soccer team their first conference win of the season as the Prairie Wolves shut out Coe College, 2-0, in rainy conditions Tuesday night (Oct. 9) at Abel Stadium.
NWU has now won two straight matches after suffering through a five-match losing streak. The Prairie Wolves improve to 6-7 overall and 1-4 in American Rivers Conference play. Coe remains winless on the year at 0-10-1 and now 0-4 in league play.
Day got the scoring started in the 15
th minute as he scored off an assist from
Jake Kennedy for his fourth goal of the season. The 1-0 lead would be the score at halftime.
The Prairie Wolves were in complete control of the second half, but couldn't find the open goal until Day struck again in the 73
rd minute. This time he scored on a header off an assist from
Luke Livingston.
In the second half, the Prairie Wolves held Coe to 0 shot attempts while attempting 15 of their own. It marked the second straight shutout for the NWU defense and the fourth shutout of the season as they have held opponents scoreless in four of the six wins.
Will Phillips was credited with the shutout win as goalkeeper for the Prairie Wolves.
Nebraska Wesleyan will look to continue to climb back up the league standings this Saturday when they travel to Pella, Iowa to face Central College at 3 pm.
