Knights Win 5-4 in Double Overtime

WAVERLY, Iowa – A goal in second overtime lifted Wartburg College to a 5-4 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday (Oct. 6) in American Rivers Men's Soccer action at the soccer fields at Wartburg College.
 
The two teams played to a 4-4 tie at the end of regulation forcing an overtime period.  In the first overtime, neither team was able to convert sending the game to a second OT.  Daniel Luzindya came through with the game-winner in the 101st minute as he gave the Knights the conference win.
 
Wartburg led 2-1 at halftime as Luzindya started the scoring right away finding the open net in the 3rd minute.  NWU responded with a goal from Conrad Lawrence in the 31st minute to tie the match at 1-1.
 
Right before halftime, Riley Close converted a penalty kick for Wartburg to give the Knights the 2-1 lead at the break.
 
In the second half, senior Jacob Dougherty had a penalty kick chance and was able to convert it to tie the score at 2-2 in the 50th minute.  That started a scoring frenzy in the second half.
 
Aya Adebayo scored in the 56th minute to give the Knights the lead back at 3-2.  Jake Kennedy scored on a header in the 68th minute to tie the game at 3-3. 

Wartburg regained the lead in the 79th minute as Jack Palen scored off an assist from Daniel Luzindqy.  Just two minutes later, Ben Schulz struck again scoring a goal in the 81st minute to tie it at 4-4 and that would be the score to conclude regulation.
 
Nebraska Wesleyan, which has lost five straight matches, finished with 10 shots in the match, compared to 28 for Wartburg.  Will Phillips had 13 saves and allowed four goals with Samuel Lesoing posting four saves with one goal allowed.
 
The Prairie Wolves return to campus to host Presentation College on Sunday in a nonconference match for Senior Day.
