LINCOLN, Neb. – Simpson College scored the only goal of the match with 12 seconds remaining as the Storm came into Abel Stadium and handed the Nebraska Wesleyan women's soccer team a heartbreaking 1-0 loss on Wednesday night (Oct. 3) in American Rivers Conference action.
Neither team had scored a goal through the first 89 minutes in a match that seemed destined for overtime. Then in the final seconds, Dani Marquez scored her first goal of the season and crushed the Prairie Wolves with the game-winner.
Both teams entered the night looking for their initial conference win of the season and in the end it was the Storm who came away victorious. They improved their record to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play. NWU falls to 6-5 overall and 0-3 in league play.
In each of the Prairie Wolves home conference matches, NWU has ended on the short end by a score of 1-0. Luther defeated the Prairie Wolves 1-0 in double overtime, now Simpson handed NWU another one goal setback in the final seconds.
NWU was the more aggressive team in the match, especially in the first half when they had seven shot attempts compared to only one for Simpson. The Prairie Wolves finished with a total of 11 shots, including three shots on goal. Simpson had five shots and three shots on goal.
The Prairie Wolves have another shot at earning that first conference win on Saturday at Wartburg College.
