Special Night of Soccer Results in Prairie Wolves 2-1 Victory

LINCOLN, Neb. – On a special night at Abel Stadium, the Nebraska Wesleyan men's soccer team kept their postseason chances alive with a 2-1 victory over University of Dubuque in the final regular season home match Wednesday (Oct. 17) in American Rivers Conference play.

Playing for their special young fan on Team Julian Night, the Prairie Wolves won their second conference match of the year to move into sixth place in the American Rivers standings with one match remaining.  The Prairie Wolves are now 7-8 overall and 2-5 in A-R-C play.  Dubuque falls to 3-11 and 1-5 in league play.

NWU got on the board late in the first half with Logan Lawrence scoring his third goal of the year in the 40th minute.  Lawrence took an assist from Ben Schulz and finished on the back post to put the Prairie Wolves ahead 1-0.  That 1-0 lead would hold up the final five minutes of the half.

Early on in the second half, Dubuque tied the match at 1-1 on a goal by Dominil Chece.  Chece scored on an assist from Chris Rigby in the 55th minute.

Less than one minute later, the Prairie Wolves snatched the lead right back.  Senior Todd Mathewson scored his first goal of the year in the 56th minute off a cross from Alex Day.  NWU took the 2-1 lead and was able to maintain that advantage the rest of the way.

Dubuque finished with 17 total shots in the match, only five shots on goal.  NWU had a total of 12 shots with five on goal.  Samuel Lesoing notched four saves in goal for the Prairie Wolves.

Nebraska Wesleyan closes out the regular season at Buena Vista on Oct. 23 in a match that will likely decide the final spot in the American Rivers Conference tournament.
