LINCOLN, Neb. – Loras College scored five unanswered goals to overcome an early Nebraska Wesleyan lead as the Duhawks came into Abel Stadium and defeated the Prairie Wolves 5-1 on Saturday night (Sept. 30) in Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
The Duhawks, who are ranked 20
th in NCAA III, improve to 8-1-1 overall and remain on top of the IIAC standings with a 2-0 mark in conference play. NWU drops to 3-6-1 and 0-2 in IIAC action.
Nebraska Wesleyan looked prime for the upset early as
Kaitlyn Sullivan connected on a penalty kick in the 18
th minute to put the Prairie Wolves 1-0. They would maintain the 1-0 advantage until late in the first half.
Loras tied the match with a penalty kick of their own at the 38:00 minute mark as Sydney Wright converted the attempt. That led to a furry of two more goals in the final two minutes before halftime. Makenzie Anderson made two straight goals to send Loras to the locker room with a 3-0 lead.
The Duhawks continued to add on their lead in the second half with Elizabeth Mills making two goals, giving her seven on the season.
NWU had only five shot attempts in the match, compared to 26 for the nationally-ranked Loras team.
Nebraska Wesleyan will go for their first IIAC win next Wednesday when they travel to Indianola, Iowa to face Simpson College.
