Box Score STORM LAKE, Iowa — Buena Vista University made quick work of Nebraska Wesleyan with a 3-0 sweep in the Iowa Conference volleyball opener for both teams on Thursday night (Sept. 14) in Storm Lake, Iowa. The Beavers won the three sets in scores of 25-18, 26-24, 25-20.
Nebraska Wesleyan falls to 6-3 overall and 0-1 in IIAC play, with the Beavers also going to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in IIAC play.
The first set was all Beavers as NWU held a 4-3 lead but that would be their last lead of the set. With the score 11-9, BVU scored five unanswered points to get a seven point advantage and they never looked back.
By far the most competitive set was the second frame. NWU trailed by four points at multiple times throughout the set but kept battling back. A kill by
Kierra Harder and bad set from the Beavers tied the set at 23-23. The Prairie Wolves couldn't take an advantage as they committed a service error. Harder kept the set alive with a kill to tie it at 24-24, but two errors from NWU gave Buena Vista the set.
NWU led 12-11 in the third set but once again BVU went on a run scoring four straight points to take a 15-12 lead and get the rowdy home crowd into the match. That took away all the Prairie Wolves momentum and the Beavers cruised to the 25-20 set win.
The Prairie Wolves hit only .055 as a team with 34 kills and 27 attack errors. NWU also had four service errors, two reception errors and a block error for a total of 34 errors. Buena Vista hit .230 as a team with 39 kills and 11.0 total blocks.
Kierra Harder and
Sidney Mell both had 10 kills to lead the NWU attack.
Hannah Bellinghausen also had a solid match with seven kills and only one error. Mell finished with a double adding 13 digs to go with her 10 kills.
Anna Gottsch dished out 19 assists in the loss.
Jade Schaap led BVU posting a double-double of 15 kills and 10 digs.
