WINONA, Minn. – Facing the host school, Saint Mary's University, in the title match of the Big Athletics/Adidas men's soccer tournament the Nebraska Wesleyan men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 match on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 10) in Winona, Minn.
Nebraska Wesleyan earned a spot in the title match with a 2-1 win over Martin Luther on Saturday afternoon.
On Sunday, SMU opened the scoring with a goal in the 20
th minute by Sean Butcher to get the early 1-0 lead.
NWU responded later in the first half when
Tanner Wood scored at the 40:00 minute mark in the first half. Wood's goal made the score 1-1 and that would remain the score at the half.
SMU got what would be the game-winning goal in the 64
th minute as Charles Reit scored on a direct kick to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.
The Prairie Wolves had some chances in the second half with six shot attempts, but they couldn't convert. Wood had three of the team's five shots on goal and finished with four total shot attempts.
Nebraska Wesleyan now has a 2-3 overall record after two weeks of competition in 2017. The Prairie Wolves will next be in action on Thursday when they travel to Omaha, Neb., to face Nebraska Christian College.
