Duhawks Bats Get Hot in Opening Game of Series

LINCOLN, Neb. – Loras College scored eight runs in the final three innings to break open the game and earn a 11-1 win over Nebraska Wesleyan in the opening game of a Iowa Conference baseball series on Friday afternoon (April 7) at NWU Field in Lincoln.

NWU has now dropped four straight home IIAC games to fall to 10-15 overall and 3-6 in conference play.  The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch for game one set at Noon.

The Duhawks had two big innings that were the difference in the game.  Loras scored three runs in the top of the 2nd inning, then didn't score again until the 7th inning when they plated four runs.

NWU got their only run in the 3rd inning making the score 3-1 and the scoreboard would read the same thing all the way up until the 7th.  After the third inning, NWU did not register another hit until the top of the 8th inning.  By that time, the Duhawks had put the game nearly out of reach with the seven run advantage.

Loras starting pitcher Brad Schwind was in control striking out nine NWU hitters and giving up only four hits through seven innings.  NWU pitcher Brody Murphy kept the Wolves in the game by giving up just three runs through six innings before allowing two more in the top of the 7th before exiting.  The NWU bullpen gave up six total runs the rest of the way.

NWU had only six hits in the game, while Loras had 16.  The Duhawks had five players with multi-hit performances.  NWU had six different players record hits in the game.
