LINCOLN, Neb. –
Cole Schumacher hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 5
th inning to give Nebraska Wesleyan their first lead of the game at 6-5 and that is all the Prairie Wolves would need as starter
Jesse Maguire pitched another complete game to seal the victory over Loras College in game one of an Iowa Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Duhawks won the second game, 12-9 to win the series two games to three.
Both teams scored two runs each in the first inning to get game one started.
Tyler Winterstein had the big hit of the inning for NWU with a 2-run single to left center field. Neither team would score again until the 5
th inning.
Loras took advantage of a Prairie Wolves error to score three unearned runs in the inning and take a 5-2 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, NWU responded in a big way.
David Morris led off the inning with a single.
Brook Johnson then singled to left field and the outfielder had the ball go through his legs allowing a run to score.
Aaron Ochsner got an infield single, then Johnson came around to score on a ground out from
Kyle Hunter. That set up the big blow for Schumacher sending the ball over the left field fence.
Maguire got in a groove retiring 10 straight batters going into the 9
th inning, including four strikeouts. The Duhawks led off the 9
th with a single but two straight strikeouts and a line out to left field ended the game.
NWU was outhit, 13-8, but the Prairie Wolves battled hard to score and Maguire worked out of trouble. He finished the game with nine strikeouts and two walks, giving up just the one earned run.
Schumacher was 2-4 with two RBI and Winterstein 2-2 with 2 RBI and two walks to lead the Prairie Wolves offense.
Game two was a slugfest that had a little bit of everything. Loras jumped ahead 4-0 early and they never trailed in the game. NWU kept getting close, but couldn't pull even.
Johnson got the NWU offense going with a solo HR in the top of the 3
rd. The Prairie Wolves would then score in six straight innings, but Loras also kept up the offense.
Schumacher had a solo home run in game two was well to give him three for the season. The Prairie Wolves had 12 hits in the game, but were hurt with six defensive errors.
David Morris was 3-4 at the plate to lead the Prairie Wolves offense. Schumacher was the other player with a multi-hit game.
NWU falls to 11-16 overall and 4-7 in IIAC play, while Loras improved to 10-14, 4-7 IIAC.
