Spartans Edge Wolves 2-1 in Pitchers Dual

LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan and University of Dubuque met in a classic pitchers dual to open their three-game IIAC baseball series on Friday afternoon at NWU Field in Lincoln.  The Spartans came away with a 2-1 victory over the Prairie Wolves, despite getting just two hits for the game.

NWU starting pitcher Brody Murphy and Spartan starter Nathan Schneidermann locked in a dual on a cool windy day at the ballpark.  Murphy pitched all nine innings giving up just two hits, but Dubuque took advantage of four walks and made productive outs to advance runners and scratch across two runs.  Schneidermann, making his first start of the year, allowed just five hits in seven innings of work to earn the victory and improve to 4-0.  Derek Erwin came in to pitch two scoreless innings to earn the save.

The Prairie Wolves scored a run in the bottom of the 1st inning to take an early lead.  Brook Johnson led off the game with a single, then moved to third after a sacrifice and error.  He scored on a perfectly executed squeeze play by Kyle Hunter to put the Prairie Wolves up 1-0.   That would be the last time that NWU would score as they were held scoreless the final eight innings.

Dubuque finally got on the board in the top of the 3rd inning.  Marquis Dew led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a fielder's choice.  He scored on a ground out.

Dew had the only other hit of the game in the 5th inning as he doubled to left field after a lead off walk.  The second run came around to score on a sacrifice squeeze bunt.

NWU's biggest threat came again in the 4th inning as Kyle Hunter hit an infield single, followed by a single from Matt Orozco.  Hunter was forced out at home on a fielder's choice to end the threat.  The Prairie Wolves had runners reach base in four straight innings, but they couldn't get the key hit.

Murphy finished the game with eight strikeouts and four walks, allowing hits to just one Spartan batter.

Nebraska Wesleyan falls to 12-21 overall and 5-12 in IIAC action while Dubuque remains on top of the IIAC standings at 16-11 and 10-3 in conference play.  The two teams will meet again for a doubleheader on Saturday in the final home games of the year.
