LINCOLN, Neb. –Dubuque pitchers held Nebraska Wesleyan to just two total runs on the day as the Spartans completed the three game sweep of the Prairie Wolves on Saturday by winning a pair of games at NWU field. Dubuque won the first game, 3-0, then took game two 11-2 on Senior Day for the Prairie Wolves.
The first game on Saturday was very similar to Friday's series opener with both starting pitchers controlling the game. Spartan starter Chase Kueter, the reigning IIAC Pitcher of the Week, got the complete game shutout allowing just four total hits in the game.
Jesse Maguire was very solid for NWU going nine strong innings allowing three runs on six hits. Maguire struck out nine and walked just two batters.
The Spartans got the first run of the game in the third inning with a pair of singles. They added to the total in the top of the 6
th inning. A one out walk put one batter on for Austin McWhite who hit a HR down the left field line to put the Spartans up 3-0. That would be the only scoring of the game for either team in a game that was played under two hours.
In game two, Nebraska Wesleyan jumped out to an early 1-0 lead like they did on Friday.
Brook Johnson led the game off with a single, then scored on a ground out from
Kyle Hunter. The Prairie Wolves would not score again until the 7
th inning as the Spartans scored eight unanswered runs.
Dubuque had a big third inning scoring four runs, then adding two more in the 6
th and two additional in the 7
th. The Spartans finished the game with 13 total hits, compared to only five for the Prairie Wolves.
NWU scored their only other run in the 8
th inning as
Micah Hoage doubled and scored on a sac fly by
Justus Stocks.
The Prairie Wolves fall to 12-23 overall and 5-13 in IIAC play while Dubuque remains in the conference lead at 18-11 and 12-3 in conference.
