Simpson Takes Final Game of Series 4-2

LINCOLN, Neb. – Simpson College took advantage of several Nebraska Wesleyan defensive mistakes as the Storm took the final game of the IIAC baseball series 4-2 over the Prairie Wolves on Saturday afternoon at NWU Field in Lincoln.

The Prairie Wolves (10-12, 3-3 IIAC) committed six total errors in the game allowing just one earned run of the four total runs.  NWU outhit Simpson by seven, but couldn't get the key hit to drive in runs and take advantage of runners in scoring position.

Neither team scored through the first three innings in a game that was delayed 45 minutes due to rain.  Simpson finally got on the board in the top of the 4th inning.  A lead-off walk would come around to score on a double, then the big blow was a 2-run HR by Adam Richman.  That HR could have been avoided, but NWU dropped a foul ball to keep the at-bat alive.

Nebraska Wesleyan finally got their offense going in the bottom of the 7th inning.  Matt Orozco singled, Aaron Ochsner walked and Kyle Hunter singled to load the bases.  Salvador Anguiano came in to pinch hit and responded with a 2-run single to make the score 3-2.

Simpson added another unearned run in the 8th inning to go up 4-2 and NWU never scored again.

Storm starting pitcher Curt Castenson went 6 2/3 innings to get the win.  He allowed seven hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts.  NWU starter Austin Ragland took the loss going six innings giving up just one earned run and four hits.

Hunter led the NWU offense going 3-5, while Tyler Winterstein broke out of his slump with two hits including a double.
