LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan starting pitchers
Brody Murphy and
Jesse Maguire both threw complete games allowing a total of just six hits in a doubleheader sweep over Simpson College on Friday afternoon (March 31) at NWU Field in Lincoln. NWU won the first game 5-1, then took the second game 2-1 to complete the sweep.
With the victories, the Prairie Wolves improve to 3-2 in Iowa Conference action and sit at 10-11 overall. Game three of the series is scheduled to be played on Saturday at Noon.
Murphy got the start in game one and allowed just one run on four hits in the complete game victory. He scattered the four hits, giving up his only run in the top of the 5
th inning when he hit two batters to start the inning then a run scored on a ground out.
NWU broke open the scoreless game in the bottom of the 4
th inning as they scored a pair of unearned runs.
Kyle Hunter singled and
Matt Orozco doubled then both came around to score on a throwing error by the Storm shortstop that would have ended the inning.
After Simpson cut the lead in half in the 5
th, NWU responded with two more runs in the bottom of the inning.
Justus Stocks reach base on a wild pitch after a strikeout. He then moved to second on a single from
Brook Johnson and scored on an RBI single from
Aaron Ochsner. Johnson then scored on another Storm error as they attempted a double play.
The Prairie Wolves added an insurance run in the 7
th inning as Stocks singled, stole two bases and scored on an error by the Simpson first baseman as he dropped a throw. Four of the five NWU runs were unearned.
NWU finished with eight total hits with Hunter and Orozco both going 2-4 on the day. Murphy improved to 3-2 with the win as he struck out three and walked two with two hit batters.
Game two was an even more dominating performance on the mound by
Jesse Maguire. Maguire retired the first 15 batters of the game, including seven strikeouts as he was perfect through five. An infield hit to start the 6
th inning broke up the no-hitter. That runner came around to eventually score on a wild pitch and would be the only run of the game.
The Prairie Wolves opened the game with a 1-0 lead in the 1
st inning as Johnson singled to open the game, moved to second on a sacrifice then to third on a passed ball. He came in to score on a balk for another unearned run on the day.
NWU extended the lead to 2-0 in the 5
th inning as
Owen Gubbels singled and scored on an RBI single by Johnson.
That was all Maguire would need as he gave up just one hit the rest of the way to get the complete game victory to improve to 2-4. He finished the game with 10 strikeouts and just one walk in nine innings.
Simpson starter Adam Richman went seven innings with six strikeouts and no walks while allowing seven hits in the loss.
