9th Inning Rally Gives NWU First Ever IIAC Baseball Win

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Nebraska Wesleyan scored two runs in the top of the 9th inning to complete a comeback and earn a 7-6 victory over Coe College in game three of the opening Iowa Conference baseball series on Monday afternoon.

The win is the first ever IIAC baseball victory for the Prairie Wolves who improve to 8-11 overall and 1-2 in conference play.  Game two of the series was also completed on Monday as Coe got a walk-off grand slam for the 6-2 win.

Trailing 6-5 heading into the 9th inning, the Prairie Wolves mounted a two-out rally.  Justus Stocks walked to begin the inning, then stole second but remained there after back-to-back outs.  Kyle Hunter walked and both runners advanced on a wild pitch.  Cole Schumacher came through with an RBI single to tie the game at 6-6.  Brook Johnson followed that with a RBI double down the left field line to put NWU ahead 7-6.

After losing in walk-off fashion the first two games of the series, the Prairie Wolves wanted to avoid that in game three.  Coe led the inning off with a walk to put the tying run on base.  However, a double play erased the threat and the final out was recorded.

The game went back and forth with each team taking the lead at several different times.  NWU led 1-0 early, then trailed 3-1 after three innings.  The Prairie Wolves retook the lead at 4-3 in the 6th inning on a two-run single by Matt Orozco.  That lead didn't last long with the Kohawks answering in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.  Coe then scored in the 7th to take a 5-4 lead before NWU responded once again.  Johnson hit an RBI single to tie the score at 5-5 headed to the bottom of the 8th.

Nebraska Wesleyan had eight hits in the game, including three extra base hits.  Johnson was the leader of the Prairie Wolves offense going 3-5 with a double and two RBI.  Stocks had a triple, an RBI and walked twice and Spencer Scheer added a double with an RBI.

Connor Cech pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to earn the victory on the mound.  He did not allow a hit in his appearance to improve to 2-0.  Four different pitchers were used for the Prairie Wolves as they allowed nine total hits and five earned runs.

The Prairie Wolves return to Lincoln this weekend for a 3-game series with Simpson College.  NWU and the Storm play one 9-inning game on Friday at 3 pm, then have  a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 pm.
