LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan recorded a doubleheader sweep on their home opening night of softball on Thursday (Mar. 16) at University Place Park in Lincoln. The Prairie Wolves won the first game, 8-0, then took the nightcap 8-5 to improve to 13-5 on the season.
NWU and Peru State both had 11 hits in the first game of the day, however the Prairie Wolves took advantage of those hits and drove in runs while the Bobcats left seven runners on base.
Maddy Ethen got the scoring started for NWU in the 3
rd inning as she doubled to left center to drive in
Morgan Shipley. NWU added another run in the inning as the Bobcat catcher made an error on the throw back to the pitcher allowing Ethen to score.
NWU plated two more runs in the 4
th inning, with both runs earned. Shipley hit an RBI single for the big hit of the inning.
Jordan Arndt drove a two-run double down the left field line to highlight a four run 6
th inning. The game-winning run then came across on a
Danelle Snyder single ending the game after six innings.
LeighAnn Novotny picked up the win on the mound getting a complete game shutout.
In game two, NWU scored three runs in the bottom of the 6
th inning to break open a 5-5 tie as they earned the 8-5 victory.
Madi Francis and Arndt both had RBI doubles in the inning while Ethen had an RBI single.
The top three batters in the NWU lineup combined for eight hits and four RBI. Francis and Shipley were both 3-4 at the plate, while
Nicole Vana was 2-4.
Novotny pitched the final two innings to earn her second victory of the day. She allowed just one hit with two strikeouts.
