CLERMONT, Florida – The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team closed out their spring break trip with the biggest victory of the season as they upset 14
th-ranked Moravian College on Friday (March 10) in Clermont, Florida.
NWU scored four runs in the top of the 7
th inning to earn the victory and finish the trip with a 9-3 record. The Prairie Wolves are 11-5 overall on the 2017 season.
Nebraska Wesleyan and Moravian were tied 2-2 headed to the last inning. With one out,
Nicole Vana singled to start the rally.
Madi Francis walked with two outs to put two runners one.
Maddy Ethen drove in the go-ahead run with a single.
Jordan Arndt then delivered the big blow of the game with a 3-run home run to put the Prairie Wolves up by four.
The Prairie Wolves scored the first two runs of the game in the 1
st inning as they took advantage of an error to plate two runs. Moravian didn't score until the 6
th inning when the scored two runs to tie the game.
Claire Poppe pitched the first 5 1/3 innings of the game allowing five hits and one earned run.
LeighAnn Novotny got the victory to improve to 6-2 as she pitched the final 1 2/3 innings allowing just one hit.
Morgan Shipley had two hits to lead the NWU offense.
Earlier in the day the Prairie Wolves had their six-game winning streak snapped with a 5-3 loss to Webster University in extra innings. The Gorlocks scored two runs in the top of the 8
th inning to earn the win.
The Gorlocks scored three unearned runs in the 5
th inning to take the early lead. NWU got on the board in the bottom of the 6
th inning.
Danelle Snyder reached base on an error, then came around to score on another error by Webster.
NWU tied the game with two runs in the 7
th inning.
Madi Francis walked then scored on a double by
Maddy Ethen. Ethen scored on an Webster error to send the game to extra innings.
The two teams combined for nine errors in the game with 13 total hits. NWU had seven hits, led by
Josie Jacobson with three hits.
