LINCOLN, Neb. – Coe College jumped out to a 25-8 lead after the 1
st quarter and never allowed Nebraska Wesleyan back in the game as the Kohawks defeated the Prairie Wolves 82-65 in IIAC women's basketball action on Wednesday night (Feb. 8) at Snyder Arena.
NWU made only 2-15 from the field in the first 10 minutes, while Coe shot a blistering 10-15 to jump ou to the huge advantage.
The Prairie Wolves did outscore Coe in each of the next two quarters, but couldn't get closer than nine points. NWU used a layup by
Mikenzie Delgado to cut the score to 48-39 with 4:52 remaining in the 3
rd quarter. From there, Coe scored six unanswered points and ruined any rally chances.
It was the 3-point shooting from Coe that was the main reason for the wide margin of victory. Coe finished the game with 11 made 3-pointers on 28 attempts for 39.3 percent from beyond the arc.
Mickey Hansche went 6-10 on 3-pointers to score a game-high 22 points and lead all scorers. Jenna Lehman had 19 points with eight rebounds, while Aleena Hobbs scored 17 with seven rebounds. Those three players combined to score 58 points and lead the Kohawks to the win.
NWU picked up their shooting in the second half making over 50 percent in each period, but it was way too late. The Prairie Wolves ended the game at 38.5 percent, going 8-22 on 3-pointers.
Kate Schulte and
Addie Wetzel both had 14 points with six rebounds to lead the Prairie Wolves.
NWU will now look to bounce back and keep their postseason chances alive on a trip to Dubuque, Iowa Saturday to face the University of Dubuque.
